Class Information

Course objectives

We will study Operating Systems primarily as finished artifacts. This course takes an external, programmer's view of the operating system. The focus will be on understanding the major functions and services provided by modern operating systems, what problems those functions were designed to solve, and how to use them effectively. Projects will focus on system programming tasks, dealing with programs and processes, input/output, filesystems, dynamic memory, threads, synchronization, interprocess communication, and network programming.
